Gas-tax break would please some, but
could leave
roads in ruins
Sunday, May 11, 2008
Grand Rapids
Press
GRAND RAPIDS -- In an era of
$4-a-gallon gas, Linda Sharp is like a
lot of Americans: Conflicted.
We love our cars. But we hate expensive
gas, even while we curse the crumbling
roads that get paved by some of what we
spend at the pump.
Still, Sharp said, we deserve a break --
maybe even the much-mocked gas "holiday"
proposed by Sens. Hillary Clinton and
John McCain.
"It would help us immensely, especially
in Michigan where so much of our economy
is in tourism," Sharp said, as she
filled up last week.
Then again ...
"Eliminating that tax takes away from
things we should be doing for our
roads," she said. "It's a tough
decision."

Press

fewer crews out repairing them this
year, you can thank money problems that
increasingly limit what county road
commissions can do to keep up.

Make roads a
priority and funding
will follow
Sunday,
May 4, 2008
The Oakland Press
A pothole season that
is arguably the worst in
Michigan history is
likely to fuel
discussion of what to do
about Michigan's
crumbling roads and
bridges.
It all boils down to
money.
Some local funding
options were mentioned
in this space last week.
But a broader package
aimed at more than just
potholes is likely to be
pushed in the Michigan
legislature.
