Gas-tax break would please some, but could leave roads in ruins

GRAND RAPIDS -- In an era of $4-a-gallon gas, Linda Sharp is like a lot of Americans: Conflicted.

We love our cars. But we hate expensive gas, even while we curse the crumbling roads that get paved by some of what we spend at the pump.

Still, Sharp said, we deserve a break -- maybe even the much-mocked gas "holiday" proposed by Sens. Hillary Clinton and John McCain.

"It would help us immensely, especially in Michigan where so much of our economy is in tourism," Sharp said, as she filled up last week.

Then again ...

"Eliminating that tax takes away from things we should be doing for our roads," she said. "It's a tough decision."

A pothole season that is arguably the worst in Michigan history is likely to fuel discussion of what to do about Michigan's crumbling roads and bridges.

It all boils down to money.

Some local funding options were mentioned in this space last week. But a broader package aimed at more than just potholes is likely to be pushed in the Michigan legislature.
